The pointers are really known as the aristocrat of the gundogs. It is, however, beyond all controversies that the very appearance of the breed is quite unique and gives the dog a majestic impression of beauty. With some unique blend of mind-blowing elegance, awe-inspiring stamina and unswerving strength, the pointers have won a great deal of acceptance and admiration from all around the globe. Because of its docile disposition and high degree of uniformity in its structure and overwhelming stamina, the pointers are often referred to as the ultimate gundogs.
Although a dog of action the pointers should not possess the appearance and nature of the hounds. Actually a true type pointer must be noticeably distinctive from the hounds and should be smooth enough in appearance while having a distant view but the touch should be quite muscular and sturdy.
When it comes to the physical structure of a typical pointer, the point of prime significance is that the pointer must have slightly slanting topline – which is higher at the wither as compared to the rear part. The topline arched like this over the region of loin starting from wither is of utmost significance in order to maintain the high degree of maneuverability in the field. The level topline of the pointer would harm the spring effect that is necessary during the hours of running.
The next very significant point is the feet of a pointer, which must not be like the feet of the cat, as often seen when the dogs are not well bred. The feet should be oval in structure with the toes set closely in the form of an arch. This is essential to get a sound gripping of the ground.
History Of The Breed
As a matter fact there are basically two schools of thoughts as far as the history of the breed is concerned. The fanciers of the breed and the cynologists have formed two distinctive groups with two distinctive ideas regarding the history and origin of the breed, although both the groups are in agreement that the breed is one of the oldest and the ancient breed of the canine family. This is why the true origin or the history of the first phase of the breed’s origin could not be found, although certain paintings of the tudor era have shown that there existed a dog just like the pointers that we find today. Again some of the written records of 1650 in England have given the evidences of the existence of a breed very like our pointers of today. Amazingly a very ancient book of 1265 says about a breed of dog that had some natural instincts very much similar to what we call to be pointers today. All these merge together to give an idea that pointers are actually an ancient breed of dogs or have descended from some of the ancient breed of dogs that no longer exist today.
Actually the basic history of the origin of the breed is too obscure and totally in the dark. Some believe in the fact that the ancestors from which today’s pointers have been developed was actually introduced to England by the army officials returning back from the Spain during the period of Spanish succession.
As per the other school of thought the present day’s pointers have descended from the some unknown ancient breed of dog that had originated in Egypt. Numerous paintings and arts of the pointer like dogs of about 3000 years back that were made or engraved on the tombs of Thebes suggest that today’s pointers have got a great hidden link with some ancient breed of Egypt.
General Appearance
The general appearance of the dog is quite symmetrical with the well muscular body and an impression of innate strength and endurance. The medium width of the skull with the proportionate length of the foreface and a prominent stop and a pronounced occipital bones have given a very unique look to the breed. The very structure gives an impression of tremendous speed. Amazingly the eyes lies a the same distance from the nostrils as from the occiput.
The color usually ranges from the black and white combination to the combination of brown or orange with white. It is the marking that makes the dogs very attractive and eye catching. The alert eyes are the unique point that gives the dog a very unique look.
Nature
The pointers are noted for its docile nature with a charming and delightful character. The pointers have an amazingly stand out instinct to hunt. This instinct pillars another basic instinct to gallop as fast as it can to cover an incredible amount of ground. The pointers are quite intelligent breed and respond well on the kind but firm handling and command.
Being one of the most energetic breeds of dogs the pointers love to play and run alfresco and requires a great deal of open space. The ready to go nature of the dog helps the owners to work with their canine companions any time he or she likes. They are basically loyal obedient and above all very affectionate by nature.
Health Issue
Pointers are normally quite hardy by nature with an exception of a few health complications. Alike all the other deep chested breed the pointers are prone to the problem of bloat. The other common problems that affect the breed are the genetic disorders and certain defects in the looks and the structures that come from the unplanned and non-selective breeding. The houndiness, round ears, Roman nose, down faced look are some of the genetic faults that arise out of the unplanned breeding.
Recognitions
The Federation Of Cynologique Internationale (FCI) ahs paced the breed under the Group 7 Section2 #1, while the American Kennel Club (AKC) has categorized the pointer as a sporting breed. KC (UK), UKC and NZKC have all placed the breed under the Gundog Group. However, ANKC and CKC have placed the breed in Group 3 (gundogs) and Group 1 (sporting dogs) respectively.
